Advocates for marijuana legalization will march up South Street on Saturday, May 16th in an annual event organized by PhillyNORML. Participants will gather at Broad and South streets at 3:30PM and begin the march towards the waterfront at 4:20PM.
Speeches from local activists will take place at the South Street bridge at the conclusion of the march.
PhillyNORML was instrumental in the effort to create civil citations in Philadelphia for marijuana possession. The change in policy has stopped thousands of arrests and saved more than $1 million since it was implemented last fall.
The local group fights for local and statewide medical cannabis access, decriminalization, hemp reform and full legalization.
The Pa. Senate recently passed medical cannabis legislation and joint committee hearings were held on an industrial hemp bill.
Chris Goldstein, co chair of PhillyNORML said, “We have seen tangible progress in Philadelphia. It is time to stop arresting and prosecuting cannabis consumers across the Commonwealth.A majority of voters support these ending cannabis prohibition.”
The march on South Street has been held for more than a decade is is the local arm of the Global Cannabis March event.
The event is also part of a week of public events happening around the issue. The Keystone Cannabis Coalition is holding a hemp rally in Lancaster this weekend. On May 20-21 PhillyNORML members will travel to Washington DC to lobby members of Congress for federal reform. This is part of the National NORML conference and lobby day.
