FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Global Cannabis Peace March Hits South Street May 19th at 4 pm

Philadelphia, PA – May 17, 2012 – Philly NORML’s annual marijuana march will be held on South Street this Saturday, May 19th. Participants will meet at 4:00 pm at the intersection of Broad and South Street for this one-of-a-kind demonstration march for the reform of marijuana laws.

The Global Cannabis Peace March has become an annual event in Philadelphia as well as in over 300 cities during the month of May. Participants bring awareness to the failed policy of prohibition and call for the full legalization of marijuana. In 2011, over 1,000 marchers participated in this peaceful and courteous event in Philadelphia, which saw no arrests.

After the march, Plantlife Music & SKUNK Magazine will present a benefit show for NORML Women’s Alliance at the Media Bureau located at 725 N. 4th St. The party will feature live music, deejays and comedy.

Over 800,000 pot arrests are performed each year in America with almost 30,000 in Pennsylvania and over 4,500 in Philadelphia. Ninety percent of these arrests are for minor possession. These arrest statistics consistently demonstrate the continued racial disparity between blacks and the rest of the population. Over 75% of these arrests were black males. This disparity shows that marijuana prohibition continues to act as a form of institutionalized racism.

Now is the time to rethink prohibition and use revenue from taxing marijuana (like alcohol) to rebuild our country, invest in schools and infrastructure. and turn our struggling economy around.

If attending, please arrive at Broad and South Street no later than 4PM on Saturday May 19, 2012. For further information or interviews, contact Kevin Clough at kclough@phillynorml.org or call (267) 507-4070.
