New poll shows 8 in 10 support medical marijuana in PA

Philadelphia NORML Examiner

Medical cannabis legislation is active in PA and residents continue to show strong support. New polling conducted by Franklin & Marshall College saw a full 80% of respondents ‘Strongly Favor’ (53%) and ‘Somewhat Favor’ (27%) legal medical marijuana in Pennsylvania. That’s 80% total in support – more than any candidate for office entertains!

The poll was conducted from May 3-9 and included 1,023 residents of the Commonwealth.

Representative Mark B. Cohen introduced the PA Compassionate Use Act in the House on April 29, 2009. The first informational hearings on HB 1393 were held before the House Health and Human Services Committee in December 2009 with medical professionals, patients and advocates offering public testimony.

On May 4, 2010 state Senator Daylin Leach introduced the companion medical marijuana bill in the Senate. SB 1350 has now been referred to the Public Health and Welfare Committee. Hearings are expected this year.

The Franklin & Marshall poll was released this week and showed an increase in support from 2006.

The same poll also saw a striking 11% jump in support for overall marijuana legalization.
