Rutgers just says no to pot growing for NJ

(AP) – 3 hours ago

TRENTON, N.J. — Rutgers University will not be getting into the marijuana-growing business.

New Jersey's largest university has declined a request from Gov. Chris Christie to become the only grower of the state's medical marijuana crop.
The university issued a statement Friday saying marijuana's status as an illegal drug would jeopardize millions of dollars in federal funding to the school.
The state's legislature approved a plan to allow patients with certain chronic illnesses to access marijuana. Christie suggested the marijuana be grown by Rutgers and distributed by the state's teaching hospitals.

Implementation of the law has been delayed until January to give state health officials time to work out details.

Now maybe the patients can start getting some medicine.  They should have allowed patients to grow their own.  Do they really believe New Jersey's patients can be served with only six dispensaries?  What are the legislators afraid of?  peace joint

My two cents.  Smoke it if you got it!  The strong stuff!

Publicly they state they are afraid of it becoming like it is in California, where marijuana mini marts outnumber the number of CVS and Wallgreens in LA County.  Such a concern is voiced in just about every news article on the subject in NJ.

Privately, well that's anyone's guess.  However it seems obvious to me that with the democratic party running the legislature that individual freedom would give way to a heavily restricted and state centralized monstrosity.  In fact I would have been shocked if it were any other bill.

Prohibition...goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes.  "A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded"  Abraham Lincoln  December, 1840
